The Korea Foundation Fellowships and Grants

#1 Graduate Studies Fellowship

Eligibility Criteria

To support talented foreign graduate students in Korean Studies, this program provides scholarships for coursework and research. Here are the eligibility criteria:

  1. Academic Focus: Applicants must be foreign graduate students majoring in Korean Studies and must be enrolled in humanities or social science programs at a university during the desired scholarship period.

  2. Nationality: This program is open to foreign students who aim to advance their academic and professional careers in Korean Studies, excluding Korea. Korean nationals with permanent residency in other countries are eligible to apply. However, Korean nationals studying in the North American region (Group 1) can apply for the Fellowship, with the condition that their research field is restricted to the pre-modern era in humanities or social science programs.

  3. Research Focus: Applicants should have a primary research interest in Korea and be working on Korea-related theses or dissertations.

  4. Residence: Applicants must be in residence at their home institution. 

  5. Language Proficiency: Proficiency in the Korean language is essential for advanced research using Korean-language materials. Applicants must mention their language ability in their cover letter, and one of the three required letters of recommendation must be a language reference from an adviser or language instructor confirming the student’s language proficiency.

  6. Academic Excellence: Must have outstanding academic backgrounf.

  7. Field of Study: Eligible fields of study include Korea-related coursework and research in humanities and social sciences, culture and arts, as well as comparative research related to Korea.

  • Application Deadline: January 31
  • Screening: Conducted in early April
  • Result Announcement: May

Fellowship Details

Fellowships are valid for one academic year only. Fellowship recipients may reapply in subsequent years for additional support, but their applications will be assessed competitively against that year’s pool of applicants.

#2 Fellowship for Field Research

The Fellowship for Field Research program aims to support distinguished foreign scholars and professionals in conducting field research in Korea.

Eligibility Criteria

This section outlines the eligibility criteria for the Fellowship for Field Research program:

  1. Doctoral Candidates: Doctoral candidates who have fulfilled all academic requirements except for their dissertations are eligible to apply.

  2. Academic Professionals: Professors, lecturers, or professional researchers currently employed at universities or research organizations, and those actively involved in Korea-related course instruction or research are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to applicants with specific research plans, such as publishing a book or research paper.

  3. Culture and Arts Professionals: Professionals in culture and arts fields related to Korea, including museum curators, librarians, and government officials responsible for Korean affairs, are also eligible.

Additional Notes

  • Candidates must possess sufficient proficiency in either Korean or English to conduct their research effectively in Korea.
  • For Korean nationals, eligibility is limited to those who either hold permanent residency abroad or occupy a regular faculty position at a foreign university.

Eligible Fields of Study

The Fellowship for Field Research program supports individuals engaged in research or working in the fields of humanities, social sciences, culture, and arts related to Korean studies or Korea-related research.

Application Deadline

The application deadline for this program is July 31 of the year preceding the desired fellowship year.

#3 Fellowship for Korean Language Training

The Korean Language Training Fellowship program is designed to enhance the proficiency of overseas scholars, graduate students, and professionals in Korea-related fields by offering them an opportunity to participate in intensive language training programs at prestigious Korean universities.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for the Korean Language Training Fellowship program are as follows:

  1. Graduate Students: Graduate students pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees with a major or minor in Korea-related subjects are eligible to apply.

  2. Faculty and Researchers: Faculty members and researchers actively involved in teaching or research activities at universities or research institutes are eligible to apply.

  3. Professionals in Cultural/Artistic Organizations: Professionals working in cultural and artistic organizations related to Korea, including museum curators, librarians, and government officials responsible for Korean affairs, are also eligible to apply.

Additional Notes

  • Applicants should possess a basic knowledge of the Korean language and an ability to communicate in Korean (intermediate level preferred).
  • For Korean nationals, eligibility is limited to those with foreign permanent residency status.
  • The number of fellows selected may vary based on the Foundation’s annual budget.

The Korean Language Training Fellowship program aims to provide participants with valuable language skills and cultural insights to further their contributions to Korea-related fields.

#4 Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Postdoctoral Fellowship Program offers recent Ph.D. recipients of exceptional promise and qualifications the opportunity to engage in research at prestigious universities in the field of Korean studies. This program aims to facilitate the advancement of their scholarly pursuits and supports the publication of their dissertations as manuscripts.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for the Postdoctoral Fellowship Program are as follows:

  1. Qualifications: Foreign scholars who have earned their Ph.D. degrees in a subject related to Korea are eligible, provided they do not currently hold regular faculty positions.

  2. Ph.D. Completion: Applicants should have successfully obtained their Ph.D. degrees before commencing their fellowship research. However, the Ph.D. degree should not have been conferred more than five years prior to the start of the fellowship.

  3. Korean Nationals: Korean nationals are eligible to apply, but only if they possess permanent residency status in another country.
